Vodafone get the iPhone 3GS!

Talk about a change of heart. In the past we’ve seen Apple favour it’s exclusive deal with O2 despite a substantial customer base waiting in the wings on Vodafone and Orange. But it seems Apple’s new motto is the more the merrier. Following on from Orange’s announcement yesterday that they will be selling the iPhone 3GS towards the end of the year, Vodafone have hopped on the bandwagon and bagged themselves the iPhone 3GS with plans to launch it early next year. What does this mean for the all conquering iPhone?

Well, it’s undoubtedly great news for those in the market for an iPhone. In the past, if you wanted Apple’s touchscreen wonder phone, O2 was you’re only option. Don’t get O2 coverage in your area? Too bad. Until now that is. Come early next year, you’ll be able to choose between the UK’s top three network operators when choosing your shiny new 3GS. The deal for Orange and Vodafone also covers the last generation iPhone 3G for those who fancy an iPhone on a tighter budget. And budget leads us nicely onto our next point. With three ,major networks all vying for your attention, we could be on the verge of a brutal price war. At present, the iPhone still commands a hefty price tag on a pay monthly tariff (something us Brits aren’t accustomed to) but the new deal should see price drops resulting in a more reasonably priced iPhone (both in handset cost and pay monthly tarrif).

Looking at markets where the iPhone is available on more than one network, the iPhone is cheaper compared to markets with one network exclusive deals.Exciting stuff. The news over the past 24 hours also leaves the US as the last major territory where the iPhone is exclusive to one network; AT&T. As with the Orange deal, Vodafone have yet to release pricing and tariff information so expect this to follow over the coming months. What we do know is that the iPhone is coming to Vodafone and Orange and this can only be seen as good news for consumers (though perhaps not O2!).

If you are wanting to purchase the HTC Touch Pro2 on a subsidised contract, you can get it now on Vodafone or T-Mobile, or alternatively completely SIM-free and unlocked from many good web and electronic retailers.

Vodafone have confirmed that as of the 8th of June, the Touch Pro2 is available as a business device for business customers – meaning that “regular” consumers are not able to purchase the device from them. Vodafone say that they are restricting access to this device to business customers only “due to the specification mainly being used for business use” and they don’t seem to be making any exceptions. So, if you already have a contract with Vodafone and you’re not on a business tariff, then you will not be able to upgrade – those wanting to upgrade will need to finish their contract, close their account, wait 30 days and sign up on a new business contract.
Further to add to the disappointment of potential customers, Vodafone have implemented a custom, locked and branded firmware version which means that if you purchase the Pro2 from Vodafone directly, you will not get the nice default Touch Flow 3D interface and design; instead it has been customised to reflect Vodafone’s red branding; which doesn’t look as good. The branding has been locked, meaning that unless you want to go to extreme lengths to modify it, you will be stuck with the colour-scheme and Vodafone branding for the life of the phone.

At this point you should probably ask yourself if the HTC Touch Pro2 on Vodafone is worth signing up on a new business contract and suffering through a customised branded Touch Flow 3D design. If you’re having doubts, then you have – at the time of writing – two additional options.

The HTC Touch Pro2 is also available from T-Mobile on contract without the need for a business account; however not directly from T-Mobile. If T-Mobile is a better choice for you, prices start at £34.26 per month with the phone costing £139.99 from certain web outlets such as eXpansys UK. At this price, you can almost compare it to the new iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S deals from O2, which may make you change your mind about the Pro2 and start looking at the iPhone instead.
Alternatively, if you want the device SIM-free, you are in luck. You can find the HTC Touch Pro2 on several mainstream and lesser-known electronics web-outlets; a quick Google Products search reveals that the price for a HTC Touch Pro2 free of network ties and unlocked starts at around £440 going through to £600. Many Pro2 users have already purchased and received their devices from a UK retail outlet named Clove Technology, who received a small supply of devices at the start of June and began shipping the devices to consumers before it was available from most other retail outlets; if you want the device SIM-free from Clove, the Pro2 is currently listed at £489.90 inc VAT.

What it revealed is that people all over the world are now making it a big part of their decision, with 69% of respondents saying that the content provided with a new phone is now more important to their purchase decision than price, design or even touch screen capability.

The poll was conducted across 130 countries and asked respondents to rank a list of 10 phone features by order of importance including brand, screen size/ resolution, user experience/ phone software, phone memory, quality of camera, price, touch screen, music player, embedded content and overall design/ look and feel. They were also asked to grade each of those features individually on a five-level scale of importance.

When ranking the most important features their new phone must have, brand remains the number one factor for consumers with nearly a third of respondents (28%) placing that at the top of their list of criteria, ahead of user experience (17%). The content that comes with the handset was third with 12% of respondents worldwide saying it is ‘extremely important’ to their choice of new handset ahead of phone memory (8%), price (5%) and design (7%).
The poll showed this increased demand for embedded content across all the major international regions, but in the US consumers placed it higher on their list of priorities than those in Europe, with 60% of US respondents stating that it was ‘extremely important’ to their choice of handset compared to 47% in Europe.

The findings also indicate that the uptake of new handsets will be faster in Europe with only 25% of those surveyed saying they will not get a new phone this year compared to a massive 40% of US consumers polled.

In Asia, brand was again the key overall factor for phone choice with 28% of consumers saying this was the number one attribute for them. Second was user interface / phone software with 18% and content a strong third with 14%. Price was only cited as the most important factor by 5%.

In India specifically, a massive 60% of respondents considered the phone interface/software to be extremely important to their choice of handset, alongside the quality of the camera (also 60%). When asked about their plans to get a new phone in 2009, 30% said they did not expect to purchase or upgrade in 2009.

Google Finally Announces Mobile Analytics

Nearly two years ago, Google Analytics was noticeably absent from my review of available mobile analytics packages. It was still possible to use Google Analytics to track smartphones, to some extent, but my unscientific test showed their solution wasn’t as accurate as mobile analytics packages that didn’t rely on JavaScript for tracking. Omniture and Coremetrics had since developed a mobile tracking solution, and the mobile analytics-only players that were developed in the absence of a prior mobile analytics solution for Google Analytics and other web analytics players had improved their solutions over time, but Google Analytics was late to the game.

This week they’ve arrived. According to the Google Analytics blog, Google Analytics will soon be able to track mobile devices and applications by adding a server side code snippet to a page. Great news for mobile marketers and SEOs on Google Analytics who have been holding out for a mobile analytics solution that was integrated with their desktop analytics.The expanded reporting hasn’t appeard in my Google Analytics yet, but when it does I will have more information on how to use Google Analytics to get insight into mobile users.

Google Adds Mobile Search Volume to New AdWords Keyword Tool

Have you tried the new beta keyword tool within AdWords yet? Kudos to Google for simplifying the process of finding mobile search volume, turning a four step process into two steps. Once you’ve accessed the beta keyword tool, select Mobile Search within the Advanced options to base your targeted monthly search volume on mobile searches in the country you specify.
It would be nice to see what percent of search volume is mobile and what is desktop to highlight the keywords that will be most effective in mobile search, but this is definitely an improvement in what is currently the only mobile keyword tool available.

I came across,which says that a mobile game featuring Paris Hilton will soon be available on mobile phones in India via Reliance. The game has been developed by a French company called Gameloft. The article raises an interesting point about the impact of Western icons and values in India. Does the availability of this game suggests that mobile phones are another tool which is exposing young people in India to Western cultural products? Or the fact that buying mobile games is a personal choice for the user therefore, may not necessarily spread western cultural values like the mainstream media?
